  • Weed membrane and timber batten edging during artificial grass ground preparation, Teignmouth
  • Outdoor Home Improvements van outside a Teignmouth town centre property during installation

Outdoor Home Improvements were delighted to take on this artificial grass project for a customer in Teignmouth who wanted to get much more out of a long, narrow rear garden. The garden already had lovely mature planting and a summerhouse at the far end, but the ground in between was a patchwork of old concrete and worn paving that did nothing for the space and was becoming difficult to keep tidy.

What Did The Artificial Grass Project Involve?

The customer wanted a soft, green, usable surface running the length of the garden, with no mowing and no muddy patches through Devon’s wetter months. Real turf was never going to thrive here. The garden is enclosed on both sides, heavily shaded by mature shrubs and a tree canopy, and gets very little direct sun in places.

The property fronts directly onto a busy town centre street, so the work had to be planned carefully to get materials in and waste out with as little disruption as possible. Just as importantly, the customer’s established borders of hydrangeas, ferns, cordylines and cottage garden planting, all built up over many years, had to be protected and left exactly as they were.

How Did Outdoor Home Improvements Help?

Our team managed the whole installation from start to finish, which included:

  • Breaking out and removing the old concrete and worn paving that ran through the middle of the garden
  • Carrying out all groundwork, excavating to depth and laying a compacted sub-base to give a firm, free-draining foundation
  • Laying a weed suppressing membrane across the full area, then fixing treated timber battens to form clean, permanent edges
  • Cutting and installing high quality artificial grass, shaped neatly around the existing borders, stepping stones and the base of the mature planting
  • Retaining and protecting the existing brick edging and every one of the customer’s established plants
  • Keeping the natural stone stepping stone path in place to lead the eye down to the summerhouse

The transformation is remarkable. What was a tired, hard-surfaced strip is now a lush green garden room that works as a genuine extension of the house, with the customer’s beautiful planting framing it on both sides. There is space for a table and chairs out on the grass, and best of all it looks this good all year round with almost no upkeep.

Artificial Grass for Town and Courtyard Gardens in Devon

Artificial grass is an ideal solution for smaller town gardens, courtyards and shaded gardens where real turf struggles to establish. It stays green right through the winter, drains freely, needs no mowing or feeding, and it is a firm favourite with families and dog owners who want a clean, usable garden all year. If you are working with a compact space, our guides to making a small garden look bigger and courtyard garden ideas are full of practical inspiration.

We install artificial grass across Devon, including Newton Abbot, Torquay, Exeter, Ashburton and Bovey Tracey, and we are always happy to advise on the right grass for a shaded or awkwardly shaped garden. Get in touch or call 01626 323525 for a free, no obligation quote.
