Outdoor Home Improvements were thrilled to take on this incredible full garden makeover in Exeter, Devon. Our customers had a tired, neglected outdoor space at the rear of their property – broken concrete slabs, an overgrown side return, and an old shed that had long outstayed its welcome – and were ready to invest in a complete overhaul. The brief was clear: deliver a high-end, low-maintenance, multi-zone outdoor living space worthy of the property and built to last.

What Did The Garden Transformation Project Involve?

The existing garden had been neglected for years and was no longer fit for the family’s lifestyle. The main patio area was a patchwork of crumbling, weed-riddled concrete slabs that were unsafe and beyond repair, while the side of the property was lost beneath overgrown grass and old timber outbuildings. To complicate matters further, the garden had significant level changes that needed careful planning and re-grading.

The customers wanted a complete overhaul that would deliver multiple zones – somewhere to entertain, somewhere sheltered to use year-round, a green lawn for the children, and a finish that would genuinely add value to the property. We worked closely with them to design a space that brought together two premium surfaces – large format polished porcelain paving and resin bound surfacing – tied together with bespoke hardwood detailing and structural timber features.

How Did Outdoor Home Improvements Help?

Our team delivered the complete garden rebuild from scratch, which included:

Full demolition and clearance, including removal of old slabs, the existing timber shed, overgrown vegetation and all garden waste
Re-levelling and full groundwork preparation across all surface zones
Installing large format polished porcelain paving across the main entertaining patio area
Laying resin bound surfacing across the driveway approach and covered outdoor room floor
Bespoke dark hardwood feature decking strips set diagonally through the resin bound area, plus matching step edging
Designing and building a bespoke structural timber pergola as part of our bespoke landscaping service, with dark-stained uprights and natural timber overhead beams
Constructing a substantial covered outdoor room with timber frame and solid pitched roof
Horizontal slatted timber privacy fence panels throughout
Artificial grass lawn area with crisp steel edge trim
Retention of the existing stone retaining walls, cleaned and incorporated as a feature planting ledge
Backed by our 10-year guarantee on both products and workmanship

The finished garden is unrecognisable from where we started. The combination of polished porcelain, resin bound surfacing, rich hardwood detailing and structural timber features has created a multi-zone luxury outdoor space that flows beautifully and works year-round. The covered outdoor room in particular has changed the way the family use their home, providing a sheltered space that is in use whatever the Devon weather is doing.
